Catch 22

Apropos of the Chimperor's tone-setting place of leadership and power, this is truly frightening*.
"We've arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces." ~Carl Sagan
I do not have training as a scientist. I have been given, as has anyone with at least a couple of years of university education, the tools of the scientific method to use whilst observing and interacting with the world in which we live.

I can suspend either belief, or disbelief.

I can imagine meaning for random patterns of natural occurrences, and I can miss the obvious.

I am ignorant as long as I want to remain so and, despite the ubiquity of knowledge, knowledge everwhere, there is only so much I can drink.

I am human. I make mistakes.

I am human. I succeed. I fail. I try, try and try yet again, because I know that, one day, being human, I will no longer be.

I believe in no god (though looked up to a few goddesses in my time) and I worship no human being.

I do believe this species of ours has proven we can pull our heads out of our contemplatable innards long enough, and though it doesn't seem like it, frequently enough to ensure that we will continue evolving. We will learn from our mistakes.

We will not let the ultimate munition of ignorance blow up apocalyptically in our faces.

(And I'm not just high on my basketball team kickin' serious arse last night. Though, of course, that's a factor.)

Thanks for the quote to Up To Date Geek, whom I just found 20 minutes ago via Technorati.

* Which word I use because of the many many many times in which people have told me "You just gotta not think about it."

What? It doesn't hurt if you don't see it coming?

Eff that. {-'

  1. There are so many frightening things about the Chimp and his fellow animals that you can really just take your pick.

Science? Who needs it? Not when True Leader has the love of gawd shining in his beady little eyes.

  2. The important thing is that the divide between our dependence on science and our ignorance of it is outside of Bush or politics. The situation has been ongoing for some time. Pirsig discussed it in Zen & the ARt of Motorcycle Maintenance back in the 70s.
Its behind the rise of NewAgism and Hippies before them. People are trying to escape from what they fear and don't understand.
Its the "All" theat they talk about in the phrase "get away from it all"

  3. Its the "All" theat they talk about in the phrase "get away from it all"

Yah, I think that's definitely a big part of it. People and their silly insecurities and petty lashin' out is the other part of it "all" though. And, like tech in the modern world, you've almost gotta become a hermit to avoid it.

That's why I see very little "grace" or Virtue in aescetism. It's good for takin' a break from "it all", but kinda pathetic as a way of life.

Though you do gotta love the Dalai Llama's spin on it. lol! Ain't nothin' helps the "austerity" be more bearable like donation$ and free lunches everywhere ya go.

  4. BRAVO for even attempting to answer within yourself those eternal questions with which mankind have struggled, and been perplexed with, since we gained consciousness itself.

    But you're on a loser.

The path of the aescetic is a universal one, and by attempting to redicule it and deny it you have narrowed your own consciousness, and indeed your own mortal existence.

I'd have to say you were a fool, or a grosse idiot, but that isn't my place to do so.

I can only hope that within your own lifetime you gather about you the humility and virtue in Life to be Wise, and at least understand that there are many things you will never Know.

    Yours, graceciously, tenbears

  5. You missed the point, Tenbears, and were not gracious. Full time aescetics are Cowards. The cheat themselves of the fullness of life itself and the only things which make humans different from every other animal. They use others and deny their responsibility for their own life, all while claiming to be "above it".

Part-time, now, that's the only moral way to go, and most folk NEVER go there at all. I don't enough, that's for sure.

    None-the...

    Too bad for everyone.
