Twenty Things Teh Shrub Don't Want Ya To Know

From CommonDreams.

I can't say it's my favorite, but this has most likely been the one about which I've had the largest number of arguments with otherwise intelligent people.
Number 19

Corporate crime is often violent crime.

Recite this list of corporate frauds and people will immediately say to you: but you can’t compare street crime and corporate crime – corporate crime is not violent crime.

Not true.

Corporate crime is often violent crime.

The FBI estimates that, 16,000 Americans are murdered every year.

Compare this to the 56,000 Americans who die every year on the job or from occupational diseases such as black lung and asbestosis and the tens of thousands of other Americans who fall victim to the silent violence of pollution, contaminated foods, hazardous consumer products, and hospital malpractice.

These deaths are often the result of criminal recklessness. Yet, they are rarely prosecuted as homicides or as criminal violations of federal laws.

[Count 'em down & note them. You'll start seeing them all around.]

And the 'toon is just to point out what kind of morons we get for leaders when we allow ourselves to buy the B$.

  1. Corporations became individuals according to law. I wonder if we could bounce off of that little trick they played on us and arrest them for some of these crimes. Probably not.

  2. Well that's an interesting idea.

The world needs more people like Erin Brokovich, more firms willing to take on these kinds of issues. Sometimes they win. What was that other book, the one that was likewise turned into a movie with William H Macy and John Travolta? Anyway. There are precedents. Just not enough warriors I guess. Getting over the fear factor is a battle in itself for some.

  5. Legally speaking, the chief decision makers of the Corporation are responsible for its activities. In practice, this frequently devolves to one of those individuals taking the fall for the whole corp.

That is, of course, against the purpose of the Law and one of the primary causes for the rampant and unconscionable abuses perpetually carried out via the Letter of the Law.

It's why we have ubiquitous and often horribly slanderous Lawyer jokes. They're deserved until our Politicians take and Hold a stand.

I think I dig that, MM. Not enough warriors with the grace to fight to Prevent Bloodshed. The ones our species has bread through millenia of warfare all have the Taste for Blood.

    Sick sad world...

    {sigh}

LOL! Any time, Tonya. That one always gets me too, prob'ly cuz we pronounce it reediculous.
